# Image benchmark: Feather against TinyPNG, on public files

Feather 2.2 (Build 806) against tinypng.com (web, uploaded 30 September 2026), on files anyone can download. Both tools were run by hand on the web/app with default settings.

## Method
- **Photos:** 16 camera JPEGs (1.7 to 4.9 MB), untouched. TinyPNG's result for each photo is scored against the original with `ssimulacra2`. Feather's size at that same score is read off its own quality curve (JPEG quality 40 to 95, log-size interpolation; `tinypng_compare.py`). The geometric mean of Feather / TinyPNG over the 16 photos is **0.804 (−19.6 %)**; the totals are 8.3 MB (TinyPNG) and 6.7 MB (Feather at equal quality) from 51.2 MB.
- **Photos at default settings:** the Feather app in Lossy mode gave 9.6 MB (mean score 76.0), TinyPNG 8.3 MB (68.7): Feather's default keeps more quality.
- **Screenshots:** 12 PNGs (1.1 to 4.5 MB), both at default settings: TinyPNG 7.3 MB (mean score 78.8), Feather 6.5 MB (78.7), so Feather is 11 % smaller at the same score.
- TinyPNG's free web upload takes 5 MB per file at most, so larger photos could not be included.

## Limits
- One run of TinyPNG on one day; the service can change. Photos are mostly product shots of cameras, plus a frog and an aircraft: not a spread of every kind of photo.
- Where TinyPNG wins: on a few screenshots (for example GNOME Maps, KDE, the TCL photo) it scores higher than Feather at a similar size.
- Feather's equal-quality size is interpolated from its curve, not measured on a file Feather wrote.
