Compression for the files you actually have
Most tools only do images. Feather for Mac also does video, PDFs and documents, and says what it did with each.

Feather picks the file type that ends up smallest and still looks right.
−87 % on a 3.9 MB camera photo

smaller, and it looks like the original. Two examples against TinyPNG.
- The scale Scores are out of 100 and say how much a result looks like the original. 90 or more: not to be told apart at normal viewing. 80: very good. 70: good. 50: visibly worse. Not the Quality setting in the app.
- The badge is how much smaller Feather made the file than its original.
- The examples A photo by Julian Herzog (CC BY 4.0) and a screenshot, Elog_screendump.png (Public domain), the one closest to the middle of the 12 screenshots.
- Both tools TinyPNG on tinypng.com, Feather in Lossy mode. The screenshot is at Feather’s default (Quality 80). For the photo we used Quality 78, which gives a file just under TinyPNG’s (498 against 502 KB) and looks more like the original. At the default 80 the photo is 518 KB, 16 KB larger than TinyPNG’s, with a score of 75.6.
- All 28 files 16 camera photos: Feather saves 82 % per photo (median) and scores 76.4; TinyPNG saves 86 % and scores 69.9. Totals 51.2 MB, TinyPNG 8.3 MB, Feather 9.6 MB. 12 screenshots: Feather 75 % and 79.5; TinyPNG 72 % and 78.6.
- At the same look TinyPNG compresses photos harder and they look less like the original. Set Feather to Quality about 62 and its photos look like TinyPNG’s and come out 20 % smaller (6.7 MB against 8.3 MB).
- Files 16 camera JPEGs (1.7 to 4.9 MB) and 12 screenshots (1.1 to 4.5 MB), free licences, uploaded to tinypng.com on 30 September 2026. Its free site takes 5 MB per file at most. Feather has no such limit. 💪🏼

Unlimited, and yours
Online compressors count your uploads and cap your files. Feather runs on your Mac, so there is nothing to count.
No limits
No file counts, no size caps, no daily allowance. A whole folder, or a 200 MB PDF: Feather does not keep score.
No subscription
Feather is free. Feather Pro is a one-time purchase, and it can be shared with your family.
No account
No sign-in, no tracking, no telemetry. The Mac app has no network access at all.
See exactly what leaves your files
A photo carries more than pixels: where it was taken, who made it, the serial number of the camera. Feather removes it and lists it for every file.
- Nothing is uploaded. Files are processed on your device. The web version’s security policy lets the page reach nothing but its own address.
- Location, camera and dates come out. Keep them if you need to: it is a setting.
Example: what a phone photo can carry
- Location
- Latitude, longitude
- Identity
- Body serial number
- Camera
- Make, model
- Dates & edits
- Date time, date time original
What the photo needs to display correctly, such as its orientation and colour profile, stays.

Feather in Terminal
The same engine as the app, as a command: for scripts, whole folders and automation. It comes with Feather Pro.
About Feather CLIGood to know
Is it really unlimited?
Yes. Feather has no file counter, no size cap and no daily allowance, on the Mac and in the browser. The only thing you can buy is Feather Pro, for presets and automation.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The Mac app has no network access. The web version compresses inside this page and cannot open a connection to anything but its own files: switch off your network after it loads and drop an image.
What can the web version do?
Photos and images (JPEG, PNG, WebP and GIF), with the same engine as the Mac app. Video, PDFs, documents and other photo types are for Feather for Mac.
How is Feather different from online compressors?
It runs on your device, so nothing is uploaded, counted or capped. It also handles video, PDFs and documents, removes private data, and shows what it did. On 16 real camera photos at default settings, Feather’s looked closer to the original than TinyPNG’s (median score 76 against 70).
Will it hurt the quality?
Lossless looks exactly the same. Lossy makes files smaller at a quality you choose, and leaves a file alone when it is already small enough. Feather doesn’t make a file bigger than the original, unless you ask for another size or format.
Do I need Feather Pro?
Not to make files smaller. Pro is for preparing files for a destination: social platforms, design tools, an exact file size, your own presets, watermarks and watched folders. It is a one-time purchase in the Mac app.
Can I share Feather Pro?
Yes. Feather Pro is family-shareable through the App Store.
Which Macs does it run on?
macOS 15 and later, on Apple silicon. Feather is available in 11 languages, in light and dark.
